1983

David Hall founds Velodyne Acoustics as an audio company specializing in subwoofer design and production. He invents and patents industry-changing technologies that allow Velodyne to dominate the subwoofer space.

1995

David Hall competes in the first season of Robot Wars: Extreme Warriors with Drillzilla, winning several competitions.

2004

Velodyne’s experience with sensors for autonomous vehicles begins when David Hall enters a vehicle in the DARPA Grand Challenge, a driverless car race sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

2005

David Hall invents real-time 3D lidar, revolutionizing the autonomous industry and paving the road for self-driving cars.

2007

The HDL-64E becomes the first commercially available, mass-produced real-time 3D lidar.

2010

Google (now Alphabet) begins testing self-driving cars on San Francisco Bay Area streets using Velodyne’s lidar technology. Alphabet’s first self-driving car prototype uses Velodyne’s HDL-64E lidar sensor.

Velodyne donates one of its early prototype sensors to the Robotics Collection at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

2012

Velodyne signs an exclusive contract with Caterpillar for lidar sensors to be used for off-road vehicles. The sensors enable Caterpillar to efficiently navigate quarries, farms, and work sites during construction.

2016

Velodyne expands the Puck family with the launches of three sensors: Puck Lite, Puck Hi-Res, and Ultra Puck.

Ultra Puck becomes the first surround view lidar sensor with a range of 200m.

Velodyne Lidar, Inc. separates from Velodyne Acoustics, becoming an independent corporation.
