Media Covers Velodyne’s Support of Next-Generation AV Developers

Reflecting its strong R&D and inventive culture, Velodyne Lidar has a history of mentoring and supplying lidar sensors to university student teams participating in autonomous technology competitions.

Lidar News posted a story on how Velodyne contributed sensors to 20 university teams competing in the 2019 Formula Student, Europe’s most established educational engineering competition. The article included comments from Erich Smidt, Executive Director Europe, Velodyne Lidar, who stated:

“Through Formula Student competitions, next-generation engineers learn how lidar 3D perception powers autonomous vehicles. It is a privilege for our company to work with these remarkable students as they reinvent automotive technology.”

A story in Aftermarket News noted, student teams selected Velodyne Puck, Puck Hi-Res and Ultra Puck sensors in their AV development. Representing one of the team’s was Christian Guba, head of department perception and environment modeling 2019, TU Darmstadt Racing Team e.V., who said:

“Participating in the Formula Student competition gives students hands-on experience in many different areas including in the development of autonomous vehicles. Lidar sensors play an important role in driverless vehicles and help us to improve our skills in perception algorithms.”

This program reflects Velodyne’s passion for supporting up-and-coming engineers who will improve the world and make it a better place.
