Velodyne Labs operates much like a design hub or incubator. Its mission is to rapidly develop sensor designs that are ready to be transferred to Velodyne’s San Jose Megafactory for production. It stands out from other R&D facilities because it acts as a concept design center, which quickly moves onto the next product after the team provides a concept that is ready to be manufactured. The center’s priorities focus on making lidar more reliable and cheaper by using the company’s ASIC technology, as well as expanding its suite of sensors.
Regarding the work environment, Velodyne Labs is a collaborative and fast paced place for engineers to work alongside other highly skilled engineers, including founder and CEO David Hall. The workspace is in an ideal location for inventing and provides fabulous views of the Oakland skyline and the San Francisco Bay. It’s near an up and coming food and craft brewery scene, the perfect recipe for unwinding after work. The East Bay is also becoming more and more attractive to those who prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of working and living in San Francisco.
Currently, 45 people work in the office, and there’s a growth plan in place to double that number in the next 12 months. The most in-demand positions for new hires include electrical engineers, FPGA designers, firmware engineers, and computer vision experts.
