Session Examines How Lidar Enables Smart Security and Automated Monitoring Systems

Velodyne Lidar sensors provide centimeter-level distance measurement data in all light conditions to facilitate highly reliable object detection and tracking in security applications.

Frank Bertini, UAV and Robotics Business Manager at Velodyne Lidar, Inc., (booth #952), will deliver a featured presentation on the business use cases for 3D lidar technology in security and safety applications at ISC East 2019, which takes place November 20-21 at the Javits Center in New York. Bertini will discuss how lidar is powering a new generation of solutions to improve threat detection and traffic management in airports, transportation and energy infrastructure, as well as commercial and private facilities.

“The combination of SENSR and Velodyne lidar technology provides an optimal platform for developers to create security and safety systems that deliver powerful monitoring and protection in a range of physical environments.”

– Han Bin Lee, CEO of Seoul Robotics

Lidar sensors use lasers to generate and measure millions of data points in real time to create a point cloud, or 3D map, of the surrounding environment. The point cloud data can be easily interpreted by a computer system for a variety of purposes. At ISC East, Bertini’s session, “3D Lidar: Emerging Use Case Studies,” will highlight five security applications for 3D lidar sensors and discuss how lidar is uniquely positioned to be applied effectively in the space. The end-use applications that will be discussed include autonomous security robots, airport check-in security, lidar combined with PTZ cameras, single person door access and wide-area perimeter security and intrusion detection.

The presentation will include a live demonstration of a Velodyne lidar sensor where the audience will be able to interact with the 3D point cloud in real time. The session takes place on November 21 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Theater 1.

“As the demands on security-related technology increase and evolve, new perception systems have the potential to vastly improve security and public safety performance,” said Bertini. “Security applications of the future will be smart, efficient and automated. This includes enhanced threat detection and accurate real-time notification in airports, retail, intersections and both private and public spaces. As the desire for smart security and automated monitoring systems increases, lidar will play a key role in enabling the next generation of security solutions.”

Attendees can visit the Velodyne booth and learn about Velodyne’s smart, powerful sensors, which provide real-time, centimeter-level distance measurements of surrounding objects during the daytime and at night. Lidar enables security solutions to define and monitor easily customized digital boundaries for highly reliable and consistent detection, anonymous tracking and counting of people.

Velodyne will also be demonstrating SENSR autonomous perception middleware software from Seoul Robotics, a platform that enables developers to build end-to-end security solutions leveraging Velodyne Lidar sensors. Seoul Robotics software uses AI for detection, counting and classification of objects. It can track the location, coordinates, speed and direction of objects and predict their path.

“The Seoul Robotics AI engine is fully optimized to utilize the entire portfolio of Velodyne Lidar sensors, which we consider to have the highest accuracy and are the most reliable lidar sensors on the market,” said Han Bin Lee, Captain of Seoul Robotics. “The combination of SENSR and Velodyne lidar technology provides an optimal platform for developers to create security and safety systems that deliver powerful monitoring and protection in a range of physical environments.”
