The Alpha Puck by Velodyne Lidar

Lidar sensors are a central component of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Automotive News featured the Velodyne Alpha Puck lidar sensor in a recent story. Dr. Mircea Gradu, Velodyne’s Sr. Vice President Quality and Validation, spoke with reporter Jack Walsworth about how Alpha Puck is “capturing automotive business” for Velodyne.

In discussing how Velodyne lidar technology “is attracting interest from a long list of customers to use in Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous applications,” the article referenced Gradu, noting:

“’The fleets are in operation,’ he said, referring to test vehicles from an automaker and Velodyne. ’If you go into China, places in Europe and certainly the U.S., you’ll see the Alpha Puck on vehicles.’”

In reviewing the success factors behind the Alpha Puck, the article cited one as being Velodyne’s manufacturing operations in San Jose, Calif., where highly-automated robotic assembly techniques are utilized.
