An article in StateTech, authored by Jon Bard, Velodyne Lidar’s Vice President of Business Development, looks at how cities are embracing lidar technology to power a range of smart city solutions including pedestrian safety, queue management, vehicle traffic management and more.
The article notes that as governments increase the use of publicly captured data for road and infrastructure used by citizens, the demand for data protection and privacy is growing. Jon writes how:
“Lidar can monitor civic environments and track pedestrians and vehicles while creating data about surroundings without collecting facial recognition or other biometric data. Lidar doesn’t require any interaction with a person’s cell phone, enabling it to accurately track people in crowded areas without invading personal devices.”
Jon also explores how lidar can help drive intelligent mobility in smart city applications and in vehicles on our roadways. For example, Velodyne’s Intelligent Infrastructure Solution can monitor traffic networks and public spaces to generate real-time data analytics and predictions.
Jon adds these smart city systems “can help municipalities advance Vision Zero strategies, which have the goal to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.”
