Lidar is positioned to play an important role in vehicle autonomy and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Robotics Business Review wrote an article about the latest ways Velodyne’s lidar technology is being showcased in the United States and China.
At the Automated Vehicles Symposium in Orlando, Fla., Velodyne is highlighting the Velodyne Alpha Puck™, a lidar sensor specifically made for autonomous driving and advanced vehicle safety at highway speeds, and the directional view Velodyne Velarray™, an integral component for ADAS.
In discussing lidar technology, Frank Bertini of Velodyne notes:
“The core lidar electronics are moving from a printed circuit board to an ASIC, which provides advantages such as higher density, lower cost, and improved reliability. The trend roughly follows Moore’s Law, leading to dramatic decreases in size, weight, and cost over relatively short time periods.”
The story also looks at Idriverplus, one of the first companies in China to launch the commercialization of driverless technology and realize mass production, which is using Velodyne’s groundbreaking lidar sensors in a range of autonomous driving products.
In the article, Dr. Zhang Dezhao, CEO of Idriverplus, discusses his company’s vision and how lidar fits in:
“We have a vision for the future that autonomous driving is not only a means of transportation, but also a necessity of live. Lidar is indispensable in our development of autonomous driving technology.”
Green Car Congress also wrote an article about how Velodyne has strategically teamed with Idriverplus to help Idriverplus with its efforts for mass production of commercial autonomous vehicles. The article states:
“Velodyne lidar sensors are being used in all Idriverplus self-driving vehicles, providing computer perception data that allows real-time object and free space detection needed for safe navigation and reliable operation.”
