A look at how intelligent infrastructure can improve traffic operations

Tech Talk Webinar: intelligent infrastructure for traffic operations from Velodyne Lidar LIVE!

Our Velodyne Lidar LIVE! series featured a discussion with Asad Lesani, Co-founder and CEO at Bluecity, on our Intelligent Infrastructure Solution (IIS). The episode focused on how IIS can help cities take a proactive approach in traffic management.

IIS combines our lidar sensors and AI software from Bluecity to monitor traffic networks. The system generates real-time data analytics and predictions, which help to improve traffic flow efficiency, advance sustainability and protect vulnerable road users. This includes near-miss analytics that can be used to predict, diagnose and address road safety challenges before the next collision happens.

During the session, Asad discussed how IIS enables city teams to take a data-driven approach to improve traffic operations, allowing them to match traffic management with demand.

Here are three takeaways from the webinar:

1. Best transport planning results by capturing multimodal, real-time traffic data.

Asad explained how planners can improve the traffic flow and safety of an intersection with detailed data. IIS provides the data needed in traffic activation and planning. The solution provides planners with information about the type of road users, the count, speed, trajectories and more in real time. It allows them to see seasonal traffic flows and how traffic changes over time, which can be critical for better decision making.

2. Cities need cost-effective smart city applications that work 24/7.

Asad reviewed how technologies, such as radar and cameras, have been used to obtain the data cities need to make traffic network changes. However, radar is not cost effective and cameras lack the reliability to operate in 24/7 applications. IIS reliably collects data in any lighting or weather condition, supporting 24/7, 365 days a year operation. It is more cost-effective and easier to install than radar- and camera-based systems. A single lidar sensor can cover an entire intersection compared to radar- and camera-based systems that typically need multiple sensors to cover the same area.

3. Civic applications require data privacy.

Asad discussed how systems with video cameras can present privacy concerns. By using our lidar sensors, IIS does not identify individuals’ facial characteristics. Lidar has an advantage in privacy over camera-only systems because lidar does not record details like hair and skin color.

IIS can help municipalities innovate their transportation systems to improve traffic flow and prevent accidents.
