Autonomous Robot Innovation with Velodyne’s Lidar Sensors and VDK

The 2022 Velodyne Lidar LIVE! series kicked off with a TechTalk featuring two of Velodyne’s lidar experts, discussing the Velarray M1600 sensor and Vella Development Kit (VDK) software, especially as they apply to robotics.

Velodyne’s Sherwin Cabatic and Christopher Thompson reviewed how Velodyne provides a full-stack solution allowing developers to build an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) that can safely navigate in sidewalk, commercial and industrial settings. These robots can operate for last mile delivery, in warehouses and on factory floors as well as more applications.

Here are three takeaways from this TechTalk webinar.

Velarray M1600 near-field lidar vision for autonomous mobile robots

1. Velarray M1600 is ideal for robotics.

Sherwin provided an overview of our Velarray M1600 solid-state lidar sensor. The sensor provides near-field perception to AMRs so they can safely navigate in a variety of environments. Sherwin walked through some of the typical problems our customers are facing and how the Velarray M1600 detects a wide range of small to large objects. The sensor provides the precise mapping and obstacle avoidance AMRs need to operate flawlessly, even in crowded areas.

Velodyne's VDK (Vella Development Kit) lidar perception software

2. Velodyne goes beyond lidar sensors.

Christopher introduced viewers to the Vella Development Kit, which allows developers to plug in our sensors with an off-the-shelf library of perception capabilities. He explained how the VDK can save development time and engineering effort, allowing developers to get their solutions off the ground and running as quickly as possible. Christopher discussed the VDK’s out-of-the-box features including scene segmentation, object detection, velocity estimation, free space detection and lidar-based odometry.

3. More software updates are on the way!

Christopher shared with viewers our plans to provide quarterly updates to VDK. These enhancements will advance VDK with the latest hardware support and processing features that our perception software has to offer.

As Sherwin stated during the episode, Velarray M1600 and VDK demonstrate that you can depend on Velodyne to solve your sensing problems, accelerate time to market and save precious development dollars.
