Compliance Management Advancing Sustainability and Safety at Velodyne Lidar

Humans of Velodyne: Loan Huynh

Placing the well-being of customers, employees and our community front and center is core to Velodyne’s corporate culture.

Loan Huynh, Regulatory Compliance Analyst at Velodyne, helps us take a proactive approach in addressing the complex tangle of requirements and mandates from regulators and customers to manage the environmental impact of our products. Her responsibilities include material compliance for Velodyne products, regulatory compliance affairs, and support for quality processes to meet customer requirements and expectations as stated in statements of work.

These activities advance Velodyne’s reputation as a sustainability-driven company by maintaining compliance with state, national and international regulations for materials and substances used in our products. Loan helps our company fulfill requirements such as California’s Proposition 65 as well as the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) and Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), and more.

We interviewed Loan Huynh to learn more about her and how regulatory compliance activities support our growing business.

Q: How did you get into regulatory compliance?

Loan: I volunteered to attend the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Bay Area local chapter symposium in Santa Clara. IEEE members referred me to their Job Boards in the regulatory and compliance field that aligned with my interests in material compliance, EHS (Employee Health and Safety) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) for product and human safety.

Q: What’s a typical day like for you in your work at Velodyne?

Loan: Regulatory and compliance tasks are incredibly complex. Deliverable requests from our customers sent to our group vary drastically. Some requests take hours; some take weeks and months to complete. Velodyne customers need data to support their worldwide strategic compliance requirements to comply with local government laws and regulations.

For example, in California, Velodyne sensors need to comply with Proposition 65. Just this alone already contains more than 1,000 chemicals on the watchlist. Velodyne needs to demonstrate we are in compliance with the requirements as stated in the relevant laws and regulations.

Q: How do our compliance management initiatives advance sustainability and safety at Velodyne?

Loan: To promote the Velodyne compliance management initiative and further advance in sustainability and safety, our RA (Regulatory Affairs) group offers training and PowerPoint self-learning on initiatives such as WEEE, RoHS and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), which is a regulation of the European Union.

In addition, Velodyne RA conducts a social responsibility management review with enterprise customers that request energy savings, environmental impact assessment, occupational health and safety assessment and more. From that task, we promoted energy savings including LED lighting and reducing air conditioning/heating usage by monitoring workload versus in-house temperature.

Q: How does our compliance management help customers address their own environmental performance and compliance needs?

Loan: Velodyne customer operations cover vast applications, from mining for material deep in the earth’s crust to the sky-high altitude applications like drone and space. Velodyne RA needs to support all customer applications to reduce product risk. For example, to reduce the mining risk of explosion, Velodyne has to control sensors for random electrical arching to reduce risk of fire.

Q: Please share a little about your life outside the work world.

Loan Huynh, employee at Velodyne Lidar

Loan: I love nature and outdoor life. Some of my best stress reduction remedies are such simple acts as sitting on the beach, under the cool shade of a colorful beach umbrella, and family gatherings for simple beach lunches.

Humans of Velodyne: Loan Hyunh

My hobbies are traveling with family and helping stranded wildlife animals, such as stranded birds born in late spring. Traveling to different places gives me opportunities to see the world and learn about different cultures. People often think of traveling as flying to faraway lands. However, simply hiking down the Coyote Trail behind Velodyne toward the airport with a bike loaded with seeds and corn chips, I can feed hundreds of baby birds and give first aid kits to homeless people along the trail.
