One of the most visible indicators of a self-driving vehicle is the spinning LiDAR sensor (Light imaging, Detection and Ranging) that is usually mounted on the roof. A top player in the development and manufacturing of automotive LiDAR sensors is Velodyne of Morgan Hill, Calif. In August 2016, Ford and Baidu announced they will each invest $75 million in Velodyne to help the company commercialize its laser-based sensors.
