Exciting Agenda Taking Shape for Second Annual World Safety Summit
Jun 16, 2019 | By Velodyne Lidar

Velodyne Lidar is hosting the second annual World Safety Summit on Autonomous Technology at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on October 2, 2019. In the spirit of collaboration, the event brings together business, government, public safety, and community leaders to share a broad range of perspectives and creative solutions to address safety issues and public concern regarding autonomous vehicles (AV).

Summit planning is well under way! The agenda is designed to promote stimulating conversations that advance understanding of the safety benefits that can be achieved with AVs. The event looks to spark collaborative work that increases consumer awareness around how AVs will revolutionize transportation.

The keynote speakers will include Dr. Lawrence Burns, a longtime visionary, technical expert in the automotive industry, Chris Urmson, Co-founder and CEO at Aurora, and Mark Rosekind, Chief Safety Innovation Officer at Zoox. Among the organizations and companies participating in the summit will be Baidu, SAE, Zoox, Waymo, Aurora, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), AutonomouStuff, Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE), Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Silicon Valley, and more.

During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to ride in autonomous vehicles, provided by AutonomouStuff, and learn from experts at informational displays and booths. Included among the technology displays is Schaeffler Group, a global automotive and industrial supplier.

The Summit will include several panel sessions that will examine topics such as the AV testing process, how to address confusing terminology and false claims related to vehicle autonomy and safety, education and public engagement, and cybersecurity.

One of the sessions will be sponsored by SAE, an organization Velodyne works with closely in advancing AV education and initiatives. Another panel will be organized by PAVE, an organization that shares Velodyne’s commitment to raising the level of public understanding about the benefits in safety, mobility, and sustainability from automated vehicles. Additionally, SAE and PAVE will assist in providing attendees live AV technology demonstrations in AutonomouStuff vehicles.

The Local Silicon Valley Chapter of AUVSI is organizing the cybersecurity panel as well as lidar-powered live “drone in a cage” demonstration. The chapter has joined Velodyne in organization and promotion of the event to the unmanned vehicle systems community.

“The World Safety Summit provides a forum for clear public explanations, and frank discussions regarding the direction of authentic autonomy while promoting consumer transparency and practices,” said Marta Hall, President and CBDO, Velodyne Lidar. “Through this dialogue, we believe we can advance the potential of autonomous vehicles, thereby reducing damage caused by the 94 percent of collisions currently resulting from human error.”

Last year, more than 250 people attended the inaugural World Safety Summit. There is more room this year, but space is limited! To sign up to attend this year’s event, go to the summit website here.
